Urinalysis Market by Test Type [Biochemical Urinalysis and Sediment Urinalysis], Product Type [Consumables and Instruments], Application [Pregnancy Tests and Disease Diagnostics], End User [Hospitals and Diagnostics Centers] – Global Analysis & Forecast 2021-2031
Clairvoyance Research conducted an in-depth market analysis study of the global urinalysis market. According to study, the market was valued at ~US$ 3.5 billion in 2020. The market is expected to witness a CAGR of ~6.5% from 2021 to 2031.
Rising prevalence of kidney diseases & urinary tract infections (UTIs), growing adoption of point-of-care (PoC) urinalysis testing, favorable government policies, and launch of technological advanced urinalysis solutions are some of the pivotal factors propelling the growth of the urinalysis market. However, dearth of skilled laboratory professionals and limitations of urine dipstick testing are likely to hamper the growth of the market to a certain extent.
With an aim to fast-track the development of urinalysis and to meet the needs of the healthcare sector, several initiatives such as providing necessary grants, permissions, clearances & approvals have been instigated by various organizations and government agencies across the world. For instance, in Mar 2019, The Dip.io urinalysis test system from Israeli-based Healthy.io received FDA 510(k) clearance for smartphone-based urinalysis test kit for at-home use.
Kidney disease is a ‘Hidden Epidemic’ that is growing profusely and poses a significant health care challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Kidney diseases are the 11th leading cause of death globally. It is touted as “Silent Disease” as most often there are no apparent early symptoms and most people are not aware of their impaired kidney function. According to International Society of Nephrology (ISN), over 850 million people worldwide have some form of kidney disease. This number is roughly double the number of people who live with diabetes and 20 times more than the prevalence of cancer worldwide or people living with AIDS/HIV. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is another significant health problem in both community and hospital–based settings. It is one of the most common disease that affects all age groups ranging from neonates to the geriatric population. It is estimated that approximately 150 million UTIs occur annually world-wide.
The adoption of point-of-care urinalysis testing has increased in the recent years. Point of care urinalysis offers fast and accurate results within minutes with a wide menu of analytes. It is used to detect and measure the level of various substances in the urine, including albumin, creatinine, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, urea/blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and other substances. The most persuasive benefit of these tests is that, as opposed to having to wait hours or days for results to arrive from an outside laboratory, clinicians can obtain the results immediately, allowing for clinical management decisions to be made while the patient is still at the care facility.
However, shortage of skilled laboratory professionals may hamper the growth of the market to a certain extent. Laboratories are continuously striving to get all of their work done with reduced lab resources, or trying to accomplish more work with the same number of resources.
The Asia Pacific region is expected be the fastest growing urinalysis market. Factors such as developing healthcare infrastructure, increasing penetration rate of advanced urine analyzers and large base of target population with unmet clinical needs can be attributed to the growth of the market. Countries such as India, China, Japan in the APAC region, are projected to offer significant growth opportunities owing to increasing prevalence of kidney diseases and rising geriatric population in the region.
The market is marked by presence of prominent players such as F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, Sysmex, Beckman Coulter, Inc., ARKRAY USA, Inc., Siemens Healthcare GmbH, Abbott, Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., ACON Laboratories, Inc., URIT Medical Electronic Co., Ltd., 77 Elektronika Kft. Other players operating in the market Cardinal Health, Quidel Corporation, among others.
