Sleep Apnea Devices Market by Product [Therapeutic Devices and Diagnostic Devices], End User [Hospitals & Sleep Laboratories and Home Care Settings] – Global Analysis & Forecast 2021-2031
Clairvoyance Research conducted an in-depth market analysis study of the global sleep apnea devices market. According to the study, the market was valued at ~U.S.$ 5.1 billion in 2020. The market is expected to witness a CAGR of ~7.5% from 2021 to 2031.
Growing prevalence of sleep apnea, technological advancements, rising awareness about the complications related to untreated sleep apnea, adoption of sleep telehealth, favorable reimbursement policies and growing demand for home healthcare are some of the pivotal factors propelling the growth of the sleep apnea devices market. However, lack of patient compliance, complications related to device usage and complex referral pathways and long waiting period acts as a deterrent for effective diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea.
With an aim to fast-track the development of sleep apnea devices and to meet the needs of the healthcare sector, several initiatives such as providing necessary grants, funding’s, clearances & approvals have been instigated by various organizations and government agencies across the world. For instance, in Feb 2021, U.S. FDA authorized marketing of eXciteOSA, a new prescription only device by Signifier Medical Technologies, indicated to treat mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and reduce snoring in patients 18 years of age and older.
Sleep apnea is considered as one of the most prevalent sleep disorders. In the U.S. alone, around ~50-70 million U.S. adults suffers from sleep disorders. Although both sexes can suffer from this disorder, men are at a higher risk of being affected by sleep apnea than women. Sleep apnea is estimated to affect ~3-7% of men and 2-5% of women. Around 2-9% of adults in the U.S. suffers from obstructive sleep apnea, whereas central sleep apnea is estimated to affect around 9% of adults over the age of 40. About 75-80% of cases of sleep apnea remains undiagnosed. Obesity, having narrow airway, smoking, alcohol consumption and genetics are considered as the most common causes of sleep apnea. Growing prevalence of sleep apnea and increasing awareness about its diagnosis and treatment is expected to propel the growth of market.
CPAP is the most common form of sleep apnea therapy and is generally covered by most insurance policies. Without insurance coverage, sleep apnea machines can cost between range of $500 -$3,000, depending upon the type of device. Coverage for CPAP machines falls under the Medicare Part B coverage of durable medical equipment. It covers around 80% of the cost of CPAP machine. If the machine is rented from supplier, Medicare may pay the rent of the machine for 13 months if the patient have been using it without interruption. Furthermore, Medicare also covers certain types of sleep tests used to diagnose sleep apnea and other types of sleep apnea devices, such as the BPAP machine and oral appliances.
The effectiveness of sleep apnea therapy largely depends on the consistent use of the machine while sleeping. Noncompliance towards the use of sleep apnea devices is the biggest barrier faced by doctors and sleep clinicians for managing the disease symptoms and associated health risks in patients. Complications related to use of sleep apnea devices such as claustrophobia, dry nose & throat, aerophagia, air leakage, etc. also contributes towards patient noncompliance. To claim the coverage of the therapy/sleep apnea device, insurance providers may request data about the use of their CPAP machine from patients. As patients has to use the device for a certain number of nights in order to claim the coverage, noncompliance to the device may affect the claiming process. These factors are expected to hinder the growth of the market to certain extent.
The Asia Pacific region is expected to be the fastest growing sleep apnea devices market. Factors such as colossal untapped pool of sleep apnea patients, extremely low diagnosis rates (less than 1%) of OSA in Asian countries such as India and China, rising geriatric population, developing healthcare infrastructure and increasing adoption of new technologies can be attributed to the growth of the Asia Pacific market.
The sleep apnea devices market is marked by presence of prominent players such as Koninklijke Philips N.V., ResMed, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare Limited., SomnoMed, At Whole You, Braebon Medical Corporation, Compumedics Limited, BMC Medical Co., Ltd., Itamar Medical Ltd., DeVilbiss Healthcare LLC, among others.
